Embarrassing loss for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday as the Arizona Cardinals overcame a 14 point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Cowboys 33-30 in overtime. Arizona completed the comeback despite trailing by 10 with under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, missing a go ahead PAT attempt with :06 remaining in regulation, being -2 in the turnover battle, and losing two RB’s and two WR’s due to injury. Dallas falls to 3-5 on the season while losing their fifth straight to Arizona and 9th game out of their last 10 to the Cardinals. Dallas hasn’t beaten Arizona at home since 2005. Cowboys visit the Colts this Sunday.

Just when you thought that Dallas’ defense was showing signs of progress, the fourth quarter happened. Arizona replaced QB Jacoby Brissett with Gardner Minshew, and RB Tyler Allgeier replaced Jeremiyah Love and Bam Knight after they left the game. Allgeier had a 63 yard rushing TD and a 52 yard run on the next drive that led to him catching a 5 yard TD pass. Cardinals scored TD’s on their final four possessions of regulation, including a 14 yard pass from Minshew to TE Trey McBride and a 13 yard completion to WR Michael Wilson that tied the game 30-30 with 6 seconds remaining. Cowboys got a second life when Chad Ryland pulled the PAT left, but after both teams traded 3 and outs in overtime, Arizona drove 44 yards in 8 plays to set Ryland up for a redeeming 42 yard game winner. Minshew was 17-23 for 188 yards and 3 TD’s in less than a half of action. Allgeier had 16 touches for 191 yards and 2 scores despite being visibly winded from being the only available RB late in the game. Dallas sacked Cardinal QB’s 5 times, including 2 from Quinnen Williams, and Shemar James returned an INT 33 yards to set up the Cowboys’ first TD, but injuries to Joey Porter and Caleb Downs left Dallas’ secondary desperately thin as the game wore on, and the Cardinals took advantage. In the fourth quarter and overtime, the Cowboys looked like a team playing on a short week and just trying to hold on. Eventually, Arizona ripped the rope out of Dallas’ hands.

The Cowboys were not able to establish the running game like they did in Philadelphia the previous Monday. Javonte Williams was held to 56 yards on 24 carries, and Dallas was held under 100 yards rushing as a team. Arizona sacked Dak Prescott 4 times, so after the Cowboys’ OL had their best performance of the season against the Eagles, they did not play well in this game. Prescott wasn’t at his best, completing 19-29 for 195 yards and a TD to Ryan Flournoy. While the Cardinals were scoring TD’s in the second half, Dallas had to settle for three Brandon Aubrey FG’s. Yes, the Cowboys scored 30 points, and that should be enough to win a game in the NFL, especially one against a team that does not have a terrific offense. But these are the Cowboys, and this team is 3-0 when they score 34 or more points, and 0-5 when scoring 31 or less. Dallas has now lost at home to Tampa Bay without their starting QB and Arizona with numerous injuries on offense. That’s not what playoff teams do, because there’s more difficult games down the road.

Dallas goes to Indianapolis this Sunday at Noon on FOX. The Colts are 2-6 and have punted on this season as they’ve traded perennial All Pro OL Quenton Nelson to Seattle and DT DeForest Buckner to San Francisco. Can’t help but wonder if star RB Jonathan Taylor could be on the move as well. Indy has lost 4 in a row after being blown out by Jacksonville on Sunday. Daniel Jones will remain the starting QB this week, despite throwing 9 INT’s on the season, two of those in Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars. It wasn’t all his fault, as TE Tyler Warren dropped a pass that Jacksonville returned for a score, and Jones was sacked four times and hit on ten occasions. Taylor has ran for 610 yards and 8 TD’s this season. Indianapolis is in the bottom quarter of the NFL in total offense, pass offense, and points per game. The Colts are 27th in rush defense, 30th in points allowed per game, and last in the NFL in turnover margin. They’re a bad team that has traded away two of their best players, so there’s no excuse for the Cowboys to lose this game. There were no excuses for Dallas to lose to Tampa Bay and Arizona either.
