Westbrook announced his retirement this past August after 18 seasons in the NBA, 11 of which were spent with the Thunder franchise. His No. 0 will be the second number retired by the Thunder.
“We are incredibly proud to retire Russell’s number. Russell made a lasting mark on the city and state during his time with the team, and his involvement in the community has endured long after,” said Thunder Chairman Clayton I. Bennett. “We are deeply grateful for his genuine care for the people of Oklahoma, and he will always be considered a member of the Oklahoma City community.”
Originally selected No. 4 overall in the 2008 NBA Draft, Westbrook retired as Oklahoma City’s leader in games played (821), points (18,859), rebounds (5,760), assists (6,897), steals (1,442), field goals made (6,626) and minutes (28,329).
“Many players make an impact but only great players leave a legacy. Russell Westbrook’s legacy was built both on the court and in the community,” said Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti. “His mindset was relentless, his commitment deep. For all those reasons, Oklahomans consider him one of their own and his number will be raised to the rafters, in Oklahoma City forever.”
Westbrook helped lead the Thunder to the third-best record in the NBA (.607; 538-348) during his 11 seasons in Oklahoma City. During that span, the Thunder reached the NBA Finals in 2012, made the playoffs nine times (third most in NBA) and made four Western Conference Finals appearances (second most in NBA).
Westbrook was named the NBA Most Valuable Player for the 2016-17 season after averaging a league-best 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds (10th in the NBA), 10.4 assists (third in the NBA) and 1.63 steals in 34.6 minutes per game to become the second player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season. His 42 triple-doubles during the 2016-17 season are an NBA record and his 209 career triple-doubles mark the most in NBA history.
The UCLA product was named a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. Westbrook earned eight of his nine All-NBA selections during his tenure with Oklahoma City, as well as eight of his nine NBA All-Star appearances. He is a two-time NBA scoring champion (2014-15, 2016-17) and led the league in assists in three separate seasons (2017-18, 2018-19, 2020-21).
Over the course of his career, Westbrook appeared in 1,301 regular season games (1,133 starts) and posted career averages of 20.9 points, 8.0 assists, 6.9 rebounds and 1.57 steals in 33.1 minutes per game. Additionally, Westbrook saw action in 135 postseason games (116 starts) where he averaged 22.5 points, 7.1 assists, 6.7 rebounds and 1.65 steals in 33.5 minutes.
