Matt Meyer:Â What a day in Stillwater on Saturday as Oklahoma State ended a 21 game losing streak against FBS opponents by beating 6th ranked Oregon 39-31. Truth is, it couldâve been worse. The Ducks had a 96 yard INT return for a TD and another TD drive of 1 yard set up by an interception. Credit Oregon for making those plays, but OSU dominated this game. Cowboys had 25 first downs to the Ducksâ 12 and OSU outgained Oregon 554-281. Drew Mestemakerâs 75 yard run on OSUâs first offensive play set the tone. Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and 2 scores, Caleb Hawkins ran 23 times for 110 yards and a score, and Wyatt Young caught 5 passes for 121 yards and a TD. Mestemakerâs leaping, spinning, 10 yard TD run put the Pokes up 36-31 early in the 4th quarter, and OSU would add a Sam Keltner FG with 3:11 left to seal the game. Cowboys ran for 237 yards, almost 6 yards a rush, and didnât allow a sack.
Obvious question is are the Cowboys closer to what they looked like against Oregon or against Tulsa? My answer would be probably somewhere in the middle, but this was a huge shot of confidence for a program thatâs been starving for success over the better part of two years. It also speaks to Eric Morris and his staffâs ability to keep the team together after a very disappointing start to the season.
