Game Previews
Matt Meyer – Cowboys start the season with a solid, yet unspectacular performance in a 27-7 win over Tennessee Martin. Big story coming out of the game is the injury to starting QB Hauss Hejny. Hejny is expected to miss a few weeks after having surgery on a broken foot. It took a while, but Zane Flores started to settle in as the game progressed. Flores threw for 136 yards and former UCO WR Terrill Davis led the Pokes with two grabs for 75 yards. Cowboys ran for 127 yards on 42 carries and it’s evident that the OL still has a long way to go. OSU’s defense did exactly what they should’ve done, holding the Skyhawks to 225 yards and 7 points that came on a first quarter trick play.
Cowboys take several steps up in class this week with a road trip to Oregon at 2:30 on Saturday. Oregon is replacing a lot from a team that went undefeated in the regular season and won the Big Ten last year. QB Dante Moore threw for 213 yards and 3 TD’s in the Ducks’ season opening blowout of Montana State. Oregon was dominant on the ground in week 1, running for 254 yards on almost 7 yards per carry. OSU must account for LB Matayo Uiagalelei who had 2 sacks against the Bobcats. The Ducks are reloading, but with a backup QB, the Cowboys are facing a tall order in Eugene. Ducks 38 Cowboys 13.
Matt Ravis – The good news? I think Hauss Hejny is a difference maker. The bad news is that the Cowboys will be without his services for the near-term future. Zane Flores was serviceable in relief, and despite lacking Hejny’s elite mobility, can do just enough with his athleticism and his arm talent to manage the game adequately. Flores ended up 13-20 with 136 passing yards — just south of seven yards per attempt. Unfortunately, help from the run game should not be counted on with OSU’s offensive line trying to find its way.
Playing Oregon in Eugene is a far cry from UT Martin at home. Despite the roster turnover, Oregon still has a cast of veritable studs, including 5-star QB Dante Moore, a stacked running back room, and the Ducks always have a host of talent at receiver. Edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei, Safety Dillon Thieneman, and Tackle Isaiah World are all considered to be top NFL prospects
The Ducks are healthier, much more talented, and have the home field advantage. So what does success look like for the Cowboys? Staying within the four-touchdown spread is a start. Individual performances and successes will be emphasized for those like us who discuss the game. Most importantly, silencing the outside noise and keeping perspective of this team’s goals, as always, remains paramount.
