Game Previews

Gideon Hamilton: The Oklahoma State Cowboys begin the 2025 season Thursday when they host Tennessee-Martin. OSU is coming off a tumultuous off-season that saw nearly the entire coaching staff dismissed and a majority of the roster transfer or graduate. The Cowboys visit Oregon in week two, so the first game serves as what needs to be a quick tune up to get everyone accustomed to each other and the program. I’m watching the offensive line performance to see if running backs have space to run or if either Cowboys quarterback has time to throw. I’ll also be watching the defense to see if they’re able to get pressure in the backfield this year.

Al Eschbach: It’s more of a dress rehearsal for both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State as the two teams open their 2025 football season. The Cowboys host UT Martin Thursday night while the Sooners get it going at home against Illinois State Saturday night. Things will get much more interesting next week. The Pokes have the daunting task of heading to seventh ranked Oregon. And we will know a lot more about OU as they entertain 14th ranked Michigan in the biggest collegiate game of Week 2.

Matt Meyer: The Oklahoma State Cowboys enter 2025 with more unknowns than any OSU team in recent memory. With a roster of more than 70 new players and very little experience returning, not to mention an entirely new coaching staff, it’s difficult to get a good feeling on what this team will be. The QB battle between Hauss Hejny and Zane Flores hasn’t been settled yet. DT Iman Oates and CB Cam Smith are the most experienced Pokes on defense and will be asked to provide leadership for a team that has been completely remade. Not that a remake wasn’t necessary because the Cowboys are coming off of a 3-9 season, their first losing campaign since Mike Gundy’s first season as head coach in 2005. A very difficult trip to Oregon will serve as a measuring stick in week 2, but the Big 12 schedule appears somewhat favorable as the Pokes miss preseason favorite Arizona State and top 25 teams in Kansas State and Iowa State come to Stillwater. Nowhere to go but up from a season ago and usually when expectations are low for Gundy’s team, the Cowboys surpass them. Pokes go 6-6 and get back in a bowl game.

Matt Ravis: The Cowboys are the single hardest team I’ve ever had to forecast. Combine the nation-wide revolving door of transfers, a brand new pair of coordinators (and virutally all new staff), and a pair of quarterbacks that have yet to take a snap in college football, and it’s a tough task. A magic eight ball might actually be useful, for once. I think this team has some talent, especially on the defensive side of the football, and the pockets have opened up in Stillwater. If they can lean into a defensive identity under coordinator Todd Grantham, there will be a floor to support any youth-related quarterback struggles. The year before last was a smashing success. Last season was an unmitigated disaster. I have to believe both results were an aberration, and that the Cowboys will be somewhere in between. Will that be good enough to compete in the wide open Big 12? In theory, but I want to see this team crawl before it walks.
