The Dallas Cowboys got back in the win column Monday night in Philadelphia, beating the shorthanded Eagles 38-21 at Lincoln Financial Field. Philly had numerous key players unavailable or hampered by injury, and the Cowboys took advantage to halt their 2 game losing streak. Dallas hosts Arizona this Sunday.

Story of this game is twofold; how beat up Philadelphia is, and the Cowboys’ success running the football. Eagles were without starting QB Jalen Hurts, their top two WR’s in DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks, plus RB Saquon Barkley saw limited action with hamstring and back issues. Barkley did all he could, touching the ball 9 times for 71 yards and a score, but it was clear that his speed and elusiveness were limited. Barkley’s back injury kept him off the field the entire fourth quarter, and by the end of the game, Philly was down to fourth string RB Elijah Mitchell. Tanner McKee threw for 211 yards and a TD, but as the game wore on, McKee’s accuracy wore off. McKee missed several open receivers and he threw a fourth quarter interception to the returning DeMarvion Overshown.

For Dallas, it was clear from the beginning of the game that they wanted to run the football, and they did it very effectively. Javonte Williams carried the ball 25 times for a career high 155 yards and a TD, and the Cowboys ran for 204 yards as a team, averaging 5.4 per carry. CeeDee Lamb caught 2 TD passes and George Pickens caught another as Dak Prescott threw for 212 yards, 3 TD’s, and no INT’s. As beat up as the Eagles were, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Zack Baun played, and Dallas ran for over 200 yards while not allowing Prescott to be sacked or even hit on a dropback. The Cowboys’ OL played their best game of the season in their most important game of the season, and this should be the formula for Dallas; even with Lamb, Pickens, and Ryan Flournoy, the Cowboys would be well served to run the football, taking pressure off of Prescott and opening things up even more for their outstanding WR corps. Score and situation can dictate play calling, but Dallas has been very pass heavy in recent weeks. That’s not when this offense is at its’ best. Yes, Lamb and Pickens might be the best WR duo in the NFL, but establishing the run and being in more manageable down and distance situations helps limit the opposition’s pass rush. The Eagles weren’t able to blitz as much as the Packers or the Buccaneers did in the previous two games, due in part to the Cowboys not being in as many obvious pass situations. It’s cliche, but it’s true; balance is important for any offense, and Dallas’ offense is no different.

The Cowboys’ defense still has a lot of improvement to make, but there were some positives Monday night. Getting Overshown back is big as he not only had an INT, but he shared the team lead with 6 tackles, and he added a TFL and 2 pass deflections. Quinnen Williams had a sack and 3 TFL. Donovan Ezeiruaku had a sack, and Joey Porter Jr. has played very well in coverage since coming over from Pittsburgh. Dallas needs to get healthier in the secondary and Philadelphia was very limited due to their injuries, but the Cowboys are taking small steps defensively. I’d still like to see more big plays from Williams, Caleb Downs, and Jaishawn Barham, because those 3 have the ability, or at least the potential, to disrupt the game with their playmaking ability. Downs and Barham are rookies that still have a lot of room to grow, but they both could be cornerstones for this defense in the future.

Cowboys come home to play the Arizona Cardinals Sunday at Noon on FOX. I don’t have a great explanation, but for whatever reason, the Cardinals give the Cowboys fits even when they’re not that great of a team. Arizona has won 8 of the last 9 against Dallas, and the Cowboys haven’t beaten the Cardinals at home since 2005. Arizona is 2-5 on the season and is in the bottom third of all of the major offensive and defensive categories. The Cards have allowed the opposition to score 30 points per game, which is last in the NFL. QB Jacoby Brissett has completed 65% of his passes for 1,600 yards with 10 TD’s and 6 INT’s. Rookie RB Jeremiyah Love is dealing with an ankle injury, and both he and the team are rushing for less than 4 yards per carry. Trey McBride is one of the better TE’s in the league, as he’s already caught 59 passes through 7 games for 472 yards and 4 scores. Budda Baker leads Arizona’s defense with 3 1/2 sacks from his safety spot. Teams that win on Monday night don’t always play well the following Sunday with less time than normal to recover physically and to prepare for the next opponent. The Cowboys better move on from the Eagles win quickly.
