Game Preview
Matt Meyer: Sooners won 23-15 in Starkville on Saturday in the first ever matchup between OU and Mississippi State. John Mateer threw for 283 yards and 2 TD’s, Isaiah Sategna touched the ball 11 times for 188 yards and a score, and Oklahoma ran for 184 yards as a team. Key sequence late in the second quarter when Taylor Wein recovered a Parker Puckett fumble at the OU 4, and the Sooners went 96 yards in 14 plays to take a 10-0 lead on a Sategna 36 yard TD reception. Mateer scrambled to his left and made a jumping throw to Sategna who ran through the Bulldog secondary for the score. Peyton Bowen also had a key interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter. Biggest question coming out of this game is why is Tate Sandell struggling? Last season’s Lou Groza Award winner missed 3 FG’s, or the final score wouldn’t have been as close.
South Carolina comes to Norman this Saturday for a 3:15 kickoff on SEC Network. Gamecocks are 4-3 overall and 2-3 in SEC play after beating Tennessee last week on a FG as time expired and winning in The Swamp two weeks before that. LaNorris Sellers is still the QB for Shane Beamer’s team, and he’s completing 61% of his passes for over 1,500 yards with 13 TD’s and 5 INT’s. Sellers and RB Matt Fuller both have over 500 yards rushing. Mazeo Bennett leads South Carolina with 31 catches, 324 yards, and 3 TD’s receiving. The Gamecocks aren’t bad stopping the run, but they’ve allowed 25 points per game. These teams have each won on the other’s home field over the last two seasons. Containing Sellers’ running ability will be key.
