Francisco Lindor slugged a three-run homer in a critical seventh inning and Christopher Morel went 3-for-4 with three RBIs against his former team as the New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of the host Miami Marlins with a 15-14 win on Wednesday night.
Tobias Myers got the final two outs to earn his second save of the season after the Marlins scored six of the game’s final seven runs to nearly rally from a six-plus-run deficit for the second time in the game.
New York, which led 8-0 in the third inning, blew that lead when Miami scored three runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth. But the Mets responded with six runs in the seventh, including Lindor’s homer and an RBI single by Morel.
The Mets (68-78) have won four straight games, and are 21-12 since selling at the trade deadline.
Miami was led by Joe Mack, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Jakob Marsee went 4-for-5 with three RBIs for the Marlins (72-75), who have lost six of their last seven games.
New York’s Brett Baty left the game in the second inning after suffering left knee pain, which forced Morel to enter the game as a pinch runner.
The bottom three in the Mets’ lineup — A.J. Ewing, Baty/Morel and Luis Torrens — combined to go 10-for-14 with 10 RBIs.
New York opened the scoring with a six-run second inning anchored by Torrens’ two-run double.
The Mets extended their lead to 8-0 in the third on Morel’s 405-foot homer to left. It was the first homer of the season for Morel, who was released by Miami on June 26.
Miami cut its deficit to 8-3 in the fourth on consecutive RBI singles by Graham Pauley and Mack.
The Marlins tied the score in the sixth on a solo homer by Owen Caissie, Griffin Conine’s run-scoring single, Otto Lopez’s RBI walk and Marsee’s two-run single.
The Mets surged back ahead in the seventh with a six-run inning capped off by Lindor’s homer to make it 14-8.
But the Marlins kept coming. Trailing 15-11 entering the bottom of the ninth, Miami got an RBI double from Conine, an RBI triple by Lopez and an RBI single by Marsee.
Myers, New York’s sixth reliever of the night, struck out Caissie and got Pauley on a popout to end the game.
Daniel Duarte (2-0) recorded the win for the Mets, while Miami’s Josh Ekness (1-3) was the losing pitcher.
