Oklahoma State began the Eric Morris era with a surprising loss to Tulsa Saturday. I’m going to name four plays that proved to be decisive in the loss.
7:48 remaning 1st quarter, 4th Down and 1 from the Tulsa 3 yard line. Result: TURNOVER ON DOWNS.
Oklahoma State went 70 yards in 13 plays on a mix of pass and run, mostly by Caleb Hawkins. However the North Texas transfer was stopped on this play, just shy of the end zone. This negated an opportunity for points for the Cowboys
10:10 reminaing 3rd quarter, 4th Down and 1 from the Tulsa 41. Result: TURNOVER ON DOWNS.
This was another fourth down stop for Tulsa. This time the Cowboys elected to line up fast on the play, but Ayo Adeyi was unable to push through, giving the Golden Hurricane the ball near midfield. They would use that to their advantage, scoring a touchdown on the ensuing drive.
8:38 Remaining 4th quarter, 4th Down and 1 from the OSU 34. Result: TURNOVER ON DOWNS.
After failing to get a necessary push on their fourth and short rushing attempts, the Cowboys elected to throw to the boundary this time. Tulsa was there, dropping Myles Coleman for no gain. It appeared as the Cowboys went quickly again that this time the Golden Hurricane’s defensive line may have not been prepared, leaving a disappointing gap evident that may have been present for an easy rushing gain. Was the fourth down gamble deep in their own territory too much of a risk? Tulsa would again take advantage of the short field, scoring two plays later.
11:45 Remaining 1st quarter, 3rd and 1 from the Tulsa 36. Result: 12 YARD GAIN.
This was certainly one of the more impactful plays of the season. Starting left tackle Jacob Sexton suffered a major leg injury. For an offensive line that faced question marks entering the season, Sexton’s involvement provided some comfort and confidence. What does this unit look like in his absence?
