GAME PREVIEWS
Matt Meyer: Coming off of a College Football Playoff appearance, expectations for the Oklahoma Sooners are as high as they’ve been in half a decade. OU qualified for the CFP for the first time since 2019 a season ago, and the Sooners will look to go farther this year behind a defense that’s expected to be one of the country’s best.
There’s a little less depth at DT behind David Stone and Jayden Jackson, and OU loses star pass rusher R Mason Thomas to the NFL, but Oklahoma returns plenty of experience defensively. Keep an eye on Michigan transfer Cole Sullivan at LB, one of the new faces on a familiar looking defense.
Offensively, John Mateer returns at QB, and he looks to improve over a tough second half of the season following surgery to his throwing hand. Isaiah Stagena returns as one of Mateer’s top targets, but the story of this offense, and perhaps the entire season, will be if this group can run the ball better. The Sooners played several freshmen on the offensive line a season ago and are counting on that experience to pay dividends. Several TE’s transferred into Norman and are expected to help Oklahoma establish a more consistent running game.
If OU can run the ball better than they did a season ago, and if Mateer plays more like he did before his injury last year, the Oklahoma offense will be better and the Sooners could be a dangerous team. It’s a challenging schedule with a game at Michigan plus a rugged SEC schedule with games at Georgia and against Texas in Dallas.
It’s time for Oklahoma to become a consistent playoff contender once again and if all goes well, insert their name back into national championship contention.
