The Dallas Cowboys won their first game in 29 days on Monday night, beating the beleaguered Las Vegas Raiders 33-16 at Allegiant Stadium in Sin City. Dallas is now 4-5-1 and will face NFC leading Philadelphia on Sunday.

Interesting start to the game as CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens didn’t start at WR. Without knowing specifics, if Brian Schottenheimer felt that a message needed to be sent, fine by me. I can understand a first year head coach trying to set a tone with his team. Hopefully the message was received, not just by Lamb and Pickens, but by the entire locker room, whatever that message was. Once Lamb and Pickens got on the field, the Cowboys’ offense got going. Dak Prescott threw for 268 yards and 4 TD’s to 4 different receivers. Pickens caught 9 passes for 144 yards and a TD, Lamb caught 5 passes for 66 yards and a score, and Javonte Williams ran 22 times for 93 yards. Jake Ferguson and Ryan Flournoy also caught TD passes as the Cowboys’ offense did what you would expect against an average at best defense. It’ll be interesting to see if Dallas can resign Pickens in the offseason, because his price goes up with every game he plays.

Defensively, the Cowboys played well, but there were a lot of factors that went into their performance. First, the Raiders are horrible on offense and didn’t even try to establish a run game, forcing them to be completely one dimensional. Secondly, Dallas was coming off of a bye week, allowing them to recharge and get healthier. Third, DT Quinnen Williams made his Cowboys debut and showed why he’s one of the better DT’s in the NFL with 1 1/2 sacks and 5 QB hits. I’m not saying Williams is going to cure all of the Cowboys’ ills, but he’ll help not only with his production but in taking some attention away from Kenny Clark and Osa Odighizuwa. When all three are in the game at once, you can’t double team them all. Fourth, Dallas also welcomed back S Donovan Wilson, S Malik Hooker, LB DeMarvion Overshown, and rookie CB Shavon Revel from injuries, so the defense has gotten healthier. Great to see Overshown back on the field after tearing his ACL, MCL, and PCL in his right knee last December. The Cowboys may not see an offense as inept as the Raiders over the rest of the season, but if you’re playing against a bad offense, you ought to make them look bad, and that’s what Dallas did. Vegas only gained 236 yards and was 3-12 on third down. Nice outing, but much tougher challenges are ahead.
teamwork makes the dream work 🤝

Up next, the Cowboys host the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday at 3:25 on FOX. Philadelphia beat Dallas 24-20 on Opening Night in a game that was all offense in the first half and all defense in the second. Jalen Hurts’ running was backbreaking for the Cowboys’ defense, as Dallas actually played pretty well defensively that night. It seemed like whenever the Cowboys had everything covered, Hurts would make a big run to convert a third down or bail the Eagles out of a jam. Philadelphia has been struggling offensively in recent weeks, and there’s reason to be slightly optimistic about Dallas defensively. However, one good performance against a terrible offense doesn’t mean that everything is fixed, and Philly still has plenty of talent with Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, Dallas Goedert, and Hurts. As poorly as the Eagles have played offensively lately, they’ve been a menace defensively, holding Green Bay to 7 points and Detroit to 9 in their last two games. If the Cowboys can find a way to beat the Eagles, then I might start to have a little bit of optimism about Dallas challenging for a playoff spot. I just think that the Cowboys have dug themselves too big of a hole, and that hole gets deeper on Sunday.
