Game Previews
Matt Meyer: For the first time in 24 years, the Oklahoma State Cowboys will miss a bowl game in consecutive seasons. The Pokes were shut out by Texas Tech on Saturday 42-0 to fall to 1-7 on the season, eliminating them from postseason play. The last time that OSU didn’t go bowling in consecutive seasons was 1998-2001. The Red Raiders led the Cowboys 13-0 after running only one offensive play, thanks to a 99 yard TD return of the opening kickoff, blocking an OSU punt after a 3 and out, and a 26 yard TD pass on the first play of the next possession. Oklahoma State only amassed 9 first downs and 182 total yards. Trent Howland led the Pokes on the ground with 58 yards on 13 carries, and Gavin Freeman had 6 catches for 47 yards to lead the receivers.
Game Notes
The Oklahoma State football team (1-7 overall; 0-5 Big 12) plays a second consecutive road game this week, facing Kansas (4-4 overall; 2-3 Big 12) in Lawrence for the first time since 2022. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, November 1, at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
On the Air
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Mark Neely and Leger Douzable on the call. Saturday’s contest will also be carried live on the Cowboy Radio Network, with Dave Hunziker handling play-by-play, John Holcomb providing analysis and Robert Allen reporting from the sideline. Fans outside of the Cowboy Radio Network can listen to the OSU broadcast for free through The Varsity Network app.
The Series
Saturday’s game marks the 75th meeting between Oklahoma State and Kansas in a series that dates back to 1923. It also marks the 15th time in 16 seasons the teams have faced each other. OSU owns a 42-30-2 all-time series advantage, including an 23-16-1 advantage in Lawrence. OSU has won 13 of the past 14 and 18 of the past 20 games in the series. The Cowboys have also won nine of the past 10 games vs. the Jayhawks in Lawrence. OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham, a former Jayhawk assistant, is in his first year as a head coach, while KU coach Lance Leipold is 1-2 against the Cowboys.
In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is not ranked, but the Cowboys have been ranked at some point in every season from 2008-24. Through the 2024 season, Oklahoma State has been ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll in 15 of the past 17 seasons and has reached the top 10 in 11 of those 17 years. Although the first College Football Playoff rankings won’t be released until later, it’s worth noting that OSU has been part of the CFP rankings in eight of the past 10 seasons entering 2025. The Cowboys have also been included in 43 of the all-time CFP Rankings, which ranks among the most appearances in the country. Kansas is not ranked.
Boone Pickens Stadium Named the Best in the Country
Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium is the best college football stadium in the country according to USA TODAY, which used reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor and Google to compile college football stadium rankings for 2025. In more than 1,700 combined reviews between the three services, Boone Pickens Stadium has an average of 4.8 stars to edge out Kansas State’s Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium for the top spot among the 136 FBS venues.
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 1-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Last week’s game against a ranked Texas Tech team marked the fifth career game as a head coach for interim head coach Doug Meacham. It was also the fourth game as interim defensive coordinator for former quality control coach Clint Bowen, who was elevated to the position September 28. The Cowboys are comprised of a majority of newcomers, as 62 of the 114 players on the roster (54%) were not part of the team in December. Through eight games, 20 of OSU’s players with at least one start are newcomers. Bright spots so far have included redshirt freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr., who recorded 163 rushing yards against Cincinnati to rank as the fifth-most for a freshman in a game in school history, and edge rusher Wendell Gregory, who was named to The Athletic’s midseason all-freshman team. Quarterbacks Hauss Hejny and Zane Flores have been sidelined with injuries, and wide receiver Sam Jackson V has stepped in and started at quarterback in their absence each of the past three games. The Cowboys have won the turnover battle in four of eight games this season. Oklahoma State’s defense has registered at least five tackles for loss three times in the past four games. Last week the defense limited Texas Tech to 370 yards of total offense in the game for the Red Raiders’ second-lowest output of the season. TTU entered the game averaging 517.9 yards of total offense per game.
