Game Previews
Matt Meyer: The frustration continues in Stillwater as Houston beat Oklahoma State 39-17 on Saturday. RB Rodney Fields, Jr. had 107 scrimmage yards and a TD, plus Gavin Freeman had a TD reception, but there were not many bright spots other than those. Cougar QB Connor Weigman threw for 306 yards and 2 TD’s, and WR Amare Thomas caught 7 passes for 157 yards. Houston had 27 first downs to OSU’s 10, and the Cougars outgained the Cowboys 485-225. There’s just not a lot for the Pokes to hang their hat on. Next up, homecoming week as the Cincinnati Bearcats come to town for a 7:00 PM kickoff on ESPN 2. Cincy is 5-1 overall, 3-0 in Big 12 play, and has cracked the top 25 as one of the surprise teams in the league this season. QB Brendan Sorsby has thrown for nearly 1,500 yards, 14 TD’s against only 1 INT, and he’s only been sacked one time. The Bearcats have three different backs, including Sorsby, that have ran for more than 300 yards this season. Evan Pryor averages 8 yards per carry and former Sooner Tawee Walker is averaging more than 5 a carry. Caleb Goodie is Cincinnati’s leading receiver as he averages almost 21 yards per reception. The Bearcats are better at stopping the run than the pass and amazingly, Cincinnati has not picked off an opposing QB this season. Homecoming will be fun. The game won’t be. Bearcats 41 Cowboys 20

Noting the Cowboys in Homecoming Games
Oklahoma State is 58-39-6 in Homecoming games. The Cowboys have won seven of their past nine and 13 of their past 17 on Homecoming.
America’s Greatest Homecoming
Homecoming is a BIG deal at Oklahoma State and is referred to as “America’s Greatest Homecoming.” This year marks the 104th time that Oklahoma State has hosted its nationally recognized Homecoming celebration. The first Homecoming was hosted in 1920 by the OSU Alumni Association and it has been held every year since then except for 1943 (canceled due to World War II) and 2020 (canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Friday’s night’s “Walkaround” is Homecoming’s most famous and highly attended event, but the week is full of daily events to commemorate the occasion, including Sunday’s dyeing of the Edmon Low Library fountain, Tuesday’s Harvest Carnival & Chili Cook-Off, Wednesday’s Hester Street Painting, Friday’s Walkaround and Saturday morning’s Sea of Orange Parade down Main Street. For a full list of activities, visit the OSU Alumni Association website, www.orangeconnection.org/homecoming.
The Series
Saturday’s game marks the fifth meeting between Oklahoma State and Cincinnati in a series that has been contested in 1958, 1959, 1983 and 2023. The Cowboys own a 3-1 all-time series advantage. Cincinnati’s only win in the series came in Stillwater in 1959. The last meeting saw OSU beat Cincinnati, 45-13, behind Ollie Gordon II’s 271 rushing yards on his way to winning the Doak Walker Award. OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham is in his first season as a head coach and UC Scott Satterfield is 0-1 in his career against Oklahoma State.
In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is not ranked, but the Cowboys have been ranked at some point in every season from 2008-24. Through the 2024 season, Oklahoma State has been ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll in 15 of the past 17 seasons and has reached the top 10 in 11 of those 17 years. Although the first College Football Playoff rankings won’t be released until November, it’s worth noting that OSU has been part of the CFP rankings in eight of the past 10 seasons entering 2025. The Cowboys have also been included in 43 of the all-time CFP Rankings, which ranks among the most appearances in the country. Cincinnati is ranked No. 24 in both polls.
Boone Pickens Stadium Named the Best in the Country
Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium is the best college football stadium in the country according to USA TODAY, which used reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor and Google to compile college football stadium rankings for 2025. In more than 1,700 combined reviews between the three services, Boone Pickens Stadium has an average of 4.8 stars to edge out Kansas State’s Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium for the top spot among the 136 Football Bowl Subdivision venues.
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Last week’s game against Houston marked the third career game as a head coach for interim head coach and offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. It was also the second game as interim defensive coordinator for former quality control coach Clint Bowen, who was elevated to the position September 28. The Cowboys are comprised of a majority of newcomers, as 62 of the 114 players on the roster (54%) were not part of the team in December. Through six games, 19 of OSU’s players with at least one start are newcomers. Bright spots so far have included redshirt freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr., who turned in a 100-yard rushing game in his first career start against Tulsa, and linebacker Bryan McCoy Jr., who has led the team in tackles in three of the six games. Quarterbacks Hauss Hejny and Zane Flores have been sidelined with injuries, and last week wide receiver Sam Jackson V stepped in and started at quarterback in their absence. The best defensive effort so far came in the season opener when the Cowboys allowed just 225 total yards to mark their lowest yards allowed in a game since a shutout of Texas Tech in 2021. The Cowboys have won the turnover battle in four of six games this season.
An Oklahoma State Win Would …

• Improve its all-time record against Cincinnati to 4-1.
• Improve its record against Cincinnati in Stillwater to 2-1.
• Make it 36-26 in its past 62 games overall, dating to 2020.
• Make it 6-3 in its last nine and 12-6 in its last 18 games when playing as an unranked team against an AP Top 25 opponent.
• Make it 11-9 in its past 20 and 20-14 in its past 34 games vs. AP-ranked teams.
