The Dallas Cowboys got back to .500 on Sunday by beating the hapless New York Jets 37-22 at MetLife Stadium. Dallas is now 2-2-1 and heads to Carolina next Sunday.

The Jets are 0-5 and are the only team in the NFL that hasn’t forced a turnover. They’re bad; let’s establish that first and foremost. That said, the Cowboys were without 4 of their 5 starting offensive linemen (their best 4 if you ask me), 2 of their top 3 receiving threats (one of which is a top 5 receiver in the league), and a couple of starters on defense. Injuries are a part of the NFL and every team has them, but against a bad team, Dallas was able to overcome those injuries and play their best game of the year. Dak Prescott is off to a terrific start this season, as he threw for 237 yards and 4 TD’s on Sunday. WR Ryan Flournoy had 114 of those yards, Jake Ferguson caught a pair of TD’s, and George Pickens had a 43 yard TD reception as he dealt with Sauce Gardner all day. RB Javonte Williams continues to impress with 135 yards on the ground, a rushing TD, and a receiving TD. The offense got a little sloppy in the second half, but overall, considering what the Cowboys didn’t have, it was a good day. Big day for Flournoy as Sunday’s game has to be a huge shot of confidence for him, and a shot of confidence for Prescott in Flournoy.

Defensively, the Cowboys were finally able to establish a pass rush, sacking Justin Fields 5 times and hitting him on 14 occasions. It wasn’t a dominating performance as the Jets had 25 first downs and 378 yards, but a lot of that production came after Dallas built a 30-6 lead in the fourth quarter. After LB Jack Sanborn left with a concussion, rookie Shemar James took his place and racked up a team leading 15 tackles. The key sequence of the game came late in the second quarter. With the Cowboys holding a 10-3 lead, the Jets were inside the Dallas 20, but Marist Liufau forced a Breece Hall fumble, and Sam Williams recovered. Seven plays later, Javonte Williams ran for a 5 yard TD on a drive keyed by a Flournoy 46 yard reception. The Cowboys then forced a three and out, and on the first play of the ensuing drive, Williams ran for 66 yards, setting up a 1 yard Ferguson TD catch, and the Cowboys led 23-3 at the half. It was a better performance from the defense, but Hall still gashed the Dallas defense for some chunk plays on the ground. No team has ran more zone coverage than the Cowboys this season, but as DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs continue to get healthier, it looks like Matt Eberflus is sprinkling in more man coverage. That bears watching as Dallas’ defense is nowhere close to being the finished product. James Houston and Dante Fowler had fantastic days getting after Fields. The Cowboys desperately need that to continue.

Next up for Dallas is a trip to Charlotte to meet the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Noon on FOX. Panthers come into this game at 2-3 but with some momentum after erasing a 17-0 deficit to beat the Dolphins 27-24 last week. Former Cowboy Rico Dowdle had a career day against Miami, running 23 times for 206 yards and a TD. Dowdle has been terrific filling in for former OSU Cowboy Chuba Hubbard, and Dowdle alluded to the Cowboys not wanting to pay him last offseason as motivation for this week. The Panthers come into week 6 10th in the NFL in rushing but 26th in passing and 24th in points per game. Carolina is in the middle of the pack in the major defensive categories, and like the Cowboys, they’re -3 through five weeks in turnover ratio. If Dallas can continue to rush the passer like they did last week in New York, they may be able to force Bryce Young into some mistakes. This is another game that the Cowboys must win if they’re going to be in the playoff hunt down the stretch.
