For the first time since 1969, the Dallas Cowboys played a game that ended in a tie. The Cowboys and Green Bay Packers played a wildly entertaining and equally maddening game on Sunday that ended 40-40 after 70 minutes of play. It’s the second highest scoring game that ended in a tie in NFL or AFL history, behind only a 43-43 result between the Raiders and Patriots in 1964. It’s the second consecutive home game that the Cowboys played to overtime and scored 40, as the Cowboys beat the Giants 40-37 in OT two weeks ago. Dallas is 1-2-1 and they visit the Jets next Sunday.
From ESPN Research: This is the first time the Cowboys have played two OT games in their first four weeks.

Another game, another terrible performance from the Dallas defense. A rush defense that had shown improvement through the first three games allowed the Packers to gain 164 yards on the ground. Jordan Love threw for 337 and 3 scores, all of those to Romeo Doubs. Fortunately, Dallas’ offense was up to the task even without CeeDee Lamb. Dak Prescott through for 319 yards and 3 scores, and George Pickens had a monster day, catching 8 passes for 134 yards and 2 TD’s.
Green Bay looked poised to destroy Dallas after going up 13-0 early in the second quarter, but Juanyeh Thomas blocked an extra point and Markquese Bell returned it for 2 points. The Cowboys would control the rest of the second period, driving 95 yards for a Prescott 2 yard TD run. On the ensuing drive, after recovering a Love fumble, Prescott found Pickens for a 15 yard TD pass, and Dallas led 16-13 at the half.

After a Cowboys’ punt to begin the third quarter, the two teams would trade TD’s for the next 6 drives. Dallas led 30-27 with just under 5 minutes remaining, but there wasn’t much doubt in my mind that the Packers would score. They did, with Love finding Doubs for his third TD catch, putting Green Bay up 34-30. After a KaVontae Turpin KO return that brought the ball out to the Dallas’ 46, the Cowboys went 54 yards in 4 plays, capped by a 28 yard Pickens TD catch that gave Dallas a 37-34 lead. First thing that came to my mind was that the Cowboys scored too quickly, and sure enough, the Packers drove into FG range, with Brandon McManus hitting from 53 yards away to send the game to OT.

Cowboys got the ball first in the extra period, but they had to settle for a 22 yard FG. After not being much of a factor all night, former Cowboy Micah Parsons came up with a sack of Prescott on 2nd and goal, and had Parsons not made that play, Prescott at least gets near the goal line and possibly into the end zone. Once again, I couldn’t help but think that the Packers would score, and they drove to the Dallas 12 before losing yardage on a pair of plays, and then Love threw an incompletion in the end zone on 3rd down. Green Bay was very fortunate that they had :01 left when the ball fell to the turf, and McManus hit a 34 yarder to end the game at 40 all.
The Cowboys must play with more discipline than they did on Sunday night. The Packers had 5 first downs off of Dallas penalties. One of those penalties, 12 men on the field, negated a Trevon Diggs interception, although Love took a shot on the play that he probably wouldn’t have taken had he not seen a Cowboy running off the field as the ball was snapped. Green Bay scored a TD on that drive. An unnecessary roughness penalty by Donovan Ezeiruaku turned a 3rd and 15 into a 1st and 10. A Sam Williams facemask penalty extended a drive that the Packers found the end zone. Another unnecessary roughness penalty, this one by Marist Liufau, turned a 3rd and 7 into a 1st down on the drive that Green Bay went ahead 34-30 late in the 4th quarter. Not many teams are good enough to overcome such backbreaking mistakes, and the Cowboys are certainly not good enough.
Next up, a trip to MetLife Stadium to meet the New York Jets on Sunday at Noon on FOX. Jets are 0-4 after falling to the Dolphins on Monday night. New York is third in the league in rushing offense but 29th in passing despite Garrett Wilson being 6th in the league in receiving yards. At some point, the Cowboys need to turn the faucet off when it comes to allowing big plays. Allowing this many chunk plays isn’t sustainable. The Jets are 25th against the run and tied for 28th in scoring defense, so Dallas should have a chance to control things on the ground. This is one of the more winnable games left on the schedule, and the Cowboys must take advantage if they’re going to compete for a spot in the playoffs.
