Andrew Copp scored the go-ahead goal with 4:38 remaining in the third period, fueling the host Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the winless Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
Copp scored his first goal of the season after crashing the crease to beat Philadelphia defenseman David Jiricek to a loose puck.
Defenseman Anton Johansson scored his first career NHL goal and Daniil Tarasov made 17 saves for the Red Wings, who snapped a three-game winless skid (0-1-2).
Matvei Michkov scored his team-leading third goal of the season and Joseph Woll turned aside 24 shots for the Flyers, who extended their franchise-record winless streak to start a season to nine games (0-6-3). They have mustered just 11 goals during that stretch and are one of two teams (the Los Angeles Kings) yet to win a game this season.
Philadelphia failed on both of its attempts on the power play. Detroit, in turn, went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Defenseman Travis Sanheim unleashed a shot from the left circle that was batted home by Michkov, who was stationed at the side of the net. The goal opened the scoring with 2:28 remaining in the first period.
Detroit nearly answered late in the period, however former captain Dylan Larkin’s shot caromed off the post.
The Red Wings forged a 1-1 tie at 4:31 of the second period after Philadelphia’s Owen Tippett committed a turnover. A 2-on-1 rush developed, and Larkin feathered a pass that was one-timed home by Johansson.
Detroit was unable to convert a power play that bridged the second and third periods. The Red Wings were able to have the man advantage after Philadelphia’s Tyson Foerster inexplicably tripped Alex DeBrincat while the latter was without a stick in his hand.
