Brooks Koepka plans to play in this week’s U.S. Open on the heels of withdrawing from the RBC Canadian Open due to a hand injury.
Koepka announced his intentions via a text message to Golfweek on Monday night, telling the outlet that “I’m gonna go this week.”
A two-time U.S. Open winner and five-time major champion, Koepka planned to test the injury at Shinnecock Hills in Southhampton, N.Y., on Tuesday before speaking to the media later in the day.
Koepka is paired with Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup with a 7:30 a.m. ET tee time on Thursday.
Koepka, 36, dealt with numbness in the pinky and ring fingers on his left hand last Friday and Saturday, resulting in his decision to withdraw from the Toronto tournament on Sunday morning.
He admitted that he was struggling with his grip. “So the club is kind of just, my fingers would come loose, it was kind of numb. I don’t know what the deal was but hopefully we’ll figure it out,” Koepka said.
He opened the RBC Canadian Open with rounds of 64 and 68. He was spotted receiving treatment on the 11th tee box at the TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley (North Course) during the third round and finished with a 72.
“Yeah, the whole warm-up, I felt fine, I was absolutely good,” he said. “Then got to the range and went to grip the club and I just couldn’t even grip it.
“So it lasted — it was all day. Felt better the last few holes. I don’t know if that’s just the meds kicked in or what it is. But hopefully we’ll figure it out now.”
He won the second of his two consecutive U.S. Open championships at Shinnecock Hills in 2018.
Koepka has been back on the PGA Tour since January after more than three years away with LIV Golf. He has placed in the top 20 in six events this year, including the Masters Tournament, but his next win would be his first in a standard PGA Tour event since the 2021 WM Phoenix Open.
