A few years ago, either during the 2021-22 season (the Thunder’s second tanking year) or the 2022-23 campaign (the play-in season), some idiot on our station actually wondered what level Shai Gilgeous-Alexander could reach. To be specific, could he be the number 1 scoring option, the lead dog, the alpha on a championship level team? We could see how talented SGA was, and by ’23, we could see the tide turning in OKC. It was getting fun again. The team was being reborn. With all of the success of the last few seasons however, it’s hard to remember how excruciating the climb back up the mountain was. The guy leading that climb was SGA, and we all could see that. But how good could he be? Consistent leading scorer on a team? All NBA? MVP? That was this particular idiot’s question.
The idiot was me.
Nothing wrong with admitting it. I had questions, not of how talented SGA was, or even that we would be an All Star, but how great of a player would he become. Well, to this point, he’s been a league MVP, a Finals MVP, a scoring champion, 3 time First Team All NBA, 4 time All Star, a whole lot more…and the best part is that he’s just getting started.

SGA’s latest MVP moment, a 3 pointer to beat the Denver Nuggets on Monday night, came on a night that he matched Wilt Chamberlain’s record for consecutive 20 point games. Ironically, the record is 126, but SGA’s winning shot gave Oklahoma City a 129-126 win over Denver. Perhaps it’s prophetic of what we might see on Thursday evening against the Boston Celtics. Never assume, but barring injury, it would be an incredible shocker if SGA doesn’t pass the Big Dipper.
SGA hit the game winner and tied Chamberlain’s record on a night in which he had 35 points, a career high 15 assists, and 0 turnovers. The only other player to go 35, 15, and 0 in those categories since the 1977-78 season is LeBron James. Gilgeous-Alexander now has 21 games in which he’s scored 30 points and not turned the ball over, good for 10th all time. Michael Jordan and Dirk Nowitzki have the record with 36, so SGA could fly by that number if health allows. He’s the first player in NBA history to have 35, 15, 0, and a true shooting pct. of 75% or better.

Let’s not forget Jaylin Williams going for 29 points and 12 boards on 10-17 from the floor and 7-11 from 3 pt. range, or a returning Ajay Mitchell pouring in 24 points on 9-16 shooting, or that the Thunder still didn’t have Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, or Alex Caruso, and beat the Nuggets when they were close to full strength, with the exception of Peyton Watson. On most nights, J Will or Mitchell would’ve been the story, but not on this night, when SGA hits the game winner and ties Wilt the Stilt. How about Matt Ravis’ stat that the Thunder now have 51 wins in a season in which their expected starting five has played a grand total of 42 minutes with each other?
Drink it in and savor it Thunder fans. Times are just about as good as they can get, and there are no guarantees as to how long they’ll last. There’s not even a guarantee that OKC will repeat as NBA Champions. That’s the only goal that truly matters, and who achieves that goal is still to be determined. But as for how good SGA can become? That question has been answered.
