The Dallas Cowboys are above .500 for the first time this season after beating the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day 31-28. Dallas has beaten both of last year’s Super Bowl participants in a five day span. At 6-5-1, the Cowboys are still on the outside looking in of the playoffs, but three straight wins have them knocking on the door. Dallas visits Detroit on Thursday night.

The game couldn’t have started much worse as Dak Prescott threw an interception on the third play from scrimmage. Prescott wasn’t able to get everything on the throw as a result of a blitz, and Jaylen Watson returned the pick 14 yards to the Cowboy 37. Two plays later, the Chiefs had a 7-0 lead after Patrick Mahomes found Rashee Rice for a 27 yard TD. Dallas answered with a 12 play, 75 yard drive, capped by a 15 yard TD reception by CeeDee Lamb. Lamb had three receptions to convert a third down on the drive. Kansas City answered with a 12 play, 72 yard drive, and on 4th and goal from 2, Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for a TD to make it 14-7. Dallas kicked a FG to make it 14-10, and then after a Chiefs punt, Dallas found the end zone again as Malik Davis burst through the Kansas City defense for a 43 yard TD run. I’d love to see more of that. Cowboys led 17-14 at the half.

After a Brandon Aubrey 36 yard FG put Dallas up by 6 going into the 4th quarter, Mahomes and the Chiefs offense got their act together. An 11 play, 80 yard drive was capped by a Mahomes 3 yard TD pass to Rice on 4th and goal. With Kansas City up 21-20, Dallas answered with a Javonte Williams 3 yard TD reception, and after Prescott found George Pickens for a 2 point conversion, the Cowboys led 28-21. Mahomes and company weren’t done however, as after an Aubrey 26 yarder put the Cowboys up by 10, Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 7 play, 67 yard march, ending with a 10 yard TD catch by former Sooner Hollywood Brown. Key play on that drive was an incredible scramble and 42 yard pass to Xavier Worthy that put Kansas City at the Dallas 20. Lest anyone think otherwise, Mahomes is still that man. The Cowboys got the ball back with 3:27 remaining, and three first downs later, Dallas was kneeling out a season sustaining win.

After having three drops against Philadelphia five days earlier, Lamb responded with 7 catches for 112 yards and a TD. The Cowboys ran for 137 yards on 5.3 a carry and didn’t allow a sack against a good defense led by Chris Jones and Nick Bolton, so I’m not sure how much Dallas really missed former Sooner Tyler Guyton at left tackle. Lamb and Pickens are so dangerous that it forced the Chiefs into several pass interference or defensive holding penalties just to prevent the Cowboys from hitting more big plays. Having that duo at WR also limits opposing safeties from being as aggressive in run support, and the Dallas’ running game is benefitting. It wasn’t the best day for the Cowboy defense, but they sacked Mahomes 3 times and forced KC into 5-13 on third down. Jadeveon Clowney had his best day as a Cowboy with 2 sacks and 6 tackles.

With each win that the Cowboys earn, the next game becomes even bigger, and that’s the case this week as Dallas travels to Detroit to meet the Lions on Thursday evening at 7:15 on Prime. Dan Campbell’s team hasn’t had the year that I would’ve thought as they come into this one at 7-5, one spot ahead of the Cowboys in the race for the final wild card spot. The Lions will more than likely be without WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, who left Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day game against Green Bay in the first quarter with an ankle injury. Brown is 5th in the NFL with 884 receiving yards and 2nd in the league with 9 TD’s. Jared Goff is 6th in the NFL in passing yards (3,025) and 3rd in completion percentage (69.8%). Jahmyr Gibbs has 1,019 rushing yards, good for 4th in the league. Gibbs and David Montgomery are a heck of a tandem. Defensively, LB Jack Campbell has the third most tackles in the league with 117, and Aidan Hutchinson has 8 1/2 sacks on the season. Dallas is 1st in total offense while Detroit is 3rd. Dallas is 2nd in scoring offense while Detroit is 3rd. The Cowboys have been better against the run since trading for Quinnen Williams, and that will be put to the test against Gibbs and Montgomery. The Lions have the edge defensively. Both teams badly need this one to stay afloat in the playoff race.
