Game Preview
Matt Meyer: Cowboys fell to 1-10 on the season by losing a heartbreaker to Central Florida 17-14 on Saturday. OSU led 14-0 at the half, but they couldn’t seal the deal. Pokes marched 75 yards in 13 plays on the opening drive, capped by a Zane Flores 5 yard TD pass to Gavin Freeman. Flores added a 6 yard TD run with :50 left in the first half to send the Cowboys into the locker room with a 2 TD lead. Knights wasted no time cutting into the Oklahoma State lead once the second half started, as Tayven Jackson hit Dylan Wade for an 83 yard TD on the first play of the third quarter. Wade caught a 2 yard TD pass with 9:12 remaining to tie it up, and a 73 yard drive that started at the UCF 10 yard line set Noe Ruelas up to hit the game winning FG of 34 yards with :57 left to play. A 50 yard reception by Wade on the first play of the drive was key as a Cowboy defense that played well for most of the game couldn’t get a stop when it needed it most. Not enough offense for the Cowboys as they only picked up 12 first downs and 228 total yards, and the vast majority of that came in the first half. OSU had six second half possessions; four were three and outs, plus another punt, and a Flores interception after UCF took the lead.
One last chance for the Cowboys to win their first conference game in two years this Saturday when Iowa State visits Stillwater for an 11:00 AM kickoff on ESPNU. QB Rocco Becht has been solid but unspectacular this season, completing 61% of his passes for 2,471 yards with 15 TD’s and 9 INT’s. The tandem of Carson Hansen and Abu Sama III has combined for nearly 1,500 yards rushing. The Cyclones don’t rush the passer particularly well as they’ve only sacked the QB 10 times in 11 games. Despite that, ISU isn’t bad defensively. The Cowboys have knocked on the door the last two weeks. Here’s hoping they can bust it open this Saturday.

The Series – A Return to the Sunshine State
Saturday’s game marks the 59th meeting between Oklahoma State and Iowa State, with the series dating to 1926. OSU owns a 34-21-3 all-time series advantage, including a 19-7-2 advantage in Stillwater. OSU has won 11 of the past 15 matchups, as well as seven of the past eight played in Stillwater. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is 3-5 in his career against OSU, and OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham is in his first season as a head coach.
In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is not ranked, but the Cowboys have been ranked at some point in every season from 2008-24. Through the 2024 season, Oklahoma State has been ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll in 15 of the past 17 seasons and has reached the top 10 in 11 of those 17 years. It’s also worth noting that OSU has been part of the CFP rankings in eight of the past 10 seasons entering 2025. The Cowboys have also been included in 43 of the all-time CFP Rankings, which ranks among the most appearances in the country. Iowa State is not ranked.
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State wraps up its 2025 campaign Saturday against Iowa State. Last week’s 17-14 loss at UCF was its closest conference game of the year, and the Cowboys did not trail until the final minute of the game. That game marked the eighth career game as a head coach for interim head coach Doug Meacham. It was also the seventh game as interim defensive coordinator for former quality control coach Clint Bowen, who was elevated to the position September 28. The Cowboys are comprised of a majority of newcomers, as 62 of the 114 players on the roster (54%) were not part of the team in December. Through 11 games, 21 of OSU’s players with at least one start are newcomers. Bright spots have included redshirt freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr., who leads the team in total yards, and edge rusher Wendell Gregory, who was named a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.
An Oklahoma State Win Would …
• Mark Doug Meacham’s first career win as a head coach.
• Improve its all-time record against Iowa State to 35-21-3.
• Improve its record against Iowa State in Stillwater to 20-7-2.
• Make it 36-31 in its past 67 games overall, dating to 2020.
• Make it 99-36 in its past 135 games vs. opponents outside of the AP Top 25, dating to 2010.
Notable Streaks and Trends Entering the Game
• Oklahoma State has not turned the ball over in four of its 11 games this season.
• Oklahoma State has converted 5 of its past 7 two-point conversion attempts dating to last season.
• OSU is 14-9 in the past 23 games when winning or tying the turnover battle.
• Dating back to 2008, OSU is 83-14 when winning the turnover battle.
• Dating back to 2005, OSU is 50-7 when not committing a turnover.
• OSU has held 38 of its past 60 Big 12 opponents under their season scoring average entering the game.
• OSU has won 87 of its past 90 games when holding its opponent to fewer than 20 points, dating back to Sept. 13, 2003. Including games when opponents have scored 20 points or fewer, OSU has won 95 of its past 98.
• OSU has held its opponent to less than a 50% third down conversion rate in 59 of its past 73 games.
• OSU is 40-22 in its past 62 games decided by fewer than 10 points.
• OSU is 52-10 in its past 62 games when leading at halftime, dating back to Sept. 17, 2016.
• OSU has won five of its past seven overtime games.
