Eight weeks into the NFL, here’s what we’ve learned, and perhaps what we don’t know yet…

The Eagles are still really good but it seems they want to make it as hard on themselves as possible. Lane Johnson doesn’t like the play calling. A.J. Brown is always upset even though he says he isn’t. They’re 6-2, going to run away with the NFC East, could have home field throughout the playoffs, and have one of the best rosters in football. What’s there to be upset about?
Yeah, the Cowboys can score and move the ball…if they’re not playing a terrific defense. Dallas’ offense is really good. Their defense should be relegated to the Mountain West.
Either the Giants are paying off their debts from winning Super Bowls 42 and 46, or they’re prepaying on some success down the road. How many gut wrenching losses can they take?
The NFC North is every bit as competitive as we thought it would be. The Bears took a step back last week against the Ravens, but at 4-3, have they turned the corner? Green Bay and Detroit ought to be a great race down the stretch, and Minnesota is capable of throwing a wrench in everything.
Still looks like to me that the NFC South is the Tampa Bay invitational, although the Panthers have been better than I thought they’d be. Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard is a heck of a RB tandem. Baker Mayfield is having a terrific year, perhaps an MVP year, but the injury to Mike Evans will be tough to overcome in the playoffs.
NFC West looks fantastic besides Arizona. The Niners and their injuries, good grief. Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy, and numerous others. Rams are still very talented, and the Seahawks are the least talked about good team in the league. Better chance than not that all three NFC wild card teams come out of the North and the West.
Best three records in the AFC belong to New England, Indianapolis, and Denver. What is this, 2005? Bills are only a half game behind the Patriots but New England won at Buffalo a few weeks ago. Still think the Bills will win that division but Mike Vrabel has done wonders for the Pats. Drake Maye is the most improved player in the league and he might be the MVP at this point.

If Maye isn’t the most improved player, it’s Daniel Jones. If Maye isn’t the MVP, it’s either Mayfield or Jonathan Taylor. The Colts are the biggest story of the season. Who knows what happens from here but Indianapolis is for real and has games coming up against the Steelers, Chiefs, Seahawks, and 49ers to prove it.
If Lamar Jackson gets healthy, don’t be surprised if the Ravens make a run in the AFC North. What’s happened to defense in this division besides Cleveland? Baltimore is bad, Pittsburgh is horrible, and Cincinnati’s defense makes them look like the Steel Curtain. Hoping Zac Taylor can make it with the Bengals. If your defense is that wretched, you better have Joe Burrow. The Bengals don’t have Joe Burrow right now and may not until next season.
AFC West looks like its NFC counterpart. It’ll be fun to see the Chiefs challenged in that division. Pat Surtain’s pectoral injury is definitely worth watching. Everything changes with him on the field for the Broncos. Can’t dismiss the Chargers either. They’ve been the least impressive of the three good teams, but they’re also 3-0 in the division. Like the NFC, it looks like all three Wild Card teams will come from two divisions: the East and the West. Maybe the Ravens make a run if Jackson gets back and plays to form.

My Super Bowl pick of Baltimore beating Detroit doesn’t look great right now, but there’s a lot of ball left. Enjoy the second half of the season!
