Some horses just can’t be broke. The Dallas Cowboys lost their 8th consecutive game to the Denver Broncos, 44-24 on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High. Dallas drops back under .500 at 3-4-1 and will host Arizona this Monday night.

The Cowboys and Broncos don’t play every season. Usually, it’s every four seasons, so the names change considerably from meeting to meeting. However, Dallas hasn’t beaten Denver since 1995. Yes, the last time the Cowboys won the Super Bowl was also the last time that they beat the Broncos. As a matter of fact, since beating Denver in Super Bowl 12, the only two times that the Cowboys beat the Broncos were in 1992 and 1995…both Super Bowl championship seasons for Dallas. So I guess if the Cowboys can beat the Broncos in 2029 or 2033, look out NFL!
After making slight progress in the win over Washington, Dallas’ defense took some steps back in Denver. Bo Nix threw for 247 yards and 4 scores, and he could’ve had a 5th TD if Courtland Sutton didn’t drop one in the end zone. There was no pressure on Nix at all. Ever. The Cowboys only registered one QB hit in the game. Not one sack…one QB hit. The combination of J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey led Denver to 179 rushing yards and more than 6 yards/carry. The Broncos did whatever they wanted to do. Dallas was without CB Trevon Diggs and Safeties Donovan Wilson, Malik Hooker, and Juanyeh Thomas, but the guys that were on the field offered little to no resistance. After playing more man coverage against the Commanders last week, the Cowboys went back to more zone coverage this week, perhaps because of the injuries. Whatever Matt Eberflus cooked up, it didn’t work at all.
Cowboys fall to 3-4-1 with 44-24 loss to the Broncos. Defense in tatters. Offense held in check. Next two games vs. Cardinals and Raiders on MNF with a bye week in between.

It was also a rough day for the Dallas offense. Dak Prescott only threw for 188 yards and 2 bad INT’s. One was just before the half when a higher percentage throw could’ve left time for a spike and a Brandon Aubrey FG attempt. Even if that throw was completed, it would’ve been difficult to get everyone lined up and the clock stopped before running out. The other pick came at the Denver 9 yard line with around 10:00 remaining. It probably wouldn’t have mattered as Dallas trailed 37-17 and it would’ve taken a miracle even if the Cowboys could’ve cut the lead to 13. Dallas couldn’t establish the run in this game either, as former Bronco Javonte Williams was held to 41 yards on 13 carries, and 31 of the Cowboys’ 108 rushing yards came on Prescott scrambles. Denver’s very good defensively and solid to good offensively, and it was clear who the much better team was on Sunday.
Brian Schottenheimer said there will be changes going forward. Don’t specify what will change or who will change. Said the Arizona game represents a “one-game season,” but not in a dramatic way, more about the bye week coming after playing the Cardinals.

Next up for the Cowboys is a home game against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday at 7:15 on ABC and ESPN. After winning their first two games, Arizona has lost five in a row as they head to Arlington after their bye week. QB Kyler Murray has missed the last two games with a foot injury, so it could be Jacoby Brissett taking snaps for the Cards. Despite missing the last two games, Murray leads the Cardinals in rushing this season. TE Trey McBride leads Arizona in receiving yards and WR Marvin Harrison, Jr. can be tough to contain. Former Eagle LB Josh Sweat leads Arizona with five sacks and seven TFL’s. If the Cowboys have any prayer of contending for a playoff spot, this is a must win against a team that is average or worse in most areas.
