If it feels like you’re on a teeter totter as a Dallas Cowboys fan, you’re not alone. Dallas climbed back to .500 with a 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys are 3-3-1 and have not had the same result in consecutive weeks all season. Dallas travels to Denver this Sunday.

Didn’t take long for the Cowboys to strike first as Dallas went 66 yards in five plays, taking only 1:55 off the clock before Javonte Williams found the end zone. Williams had a terrific day, rushing for 116 yards and the opening score as he climbed to 2nd in the NFL in rushing yards after Sunday’s action. Cowboys forced a three and out but were tackled for a safety by Daron Payne after starting the drive at their own 1 yard line. After the Commanders went ahead 8-7 with a 65 yard TD drive, Dallas answered with a 47 yard FG, giving them a 10-8 lead. After forcing another three and out, Dak Prescott found a wide open CeeDee Lamb for a 74 yard TD to make it 17-8, and the Cowboys were on their way. Jake Ferguson caught 2 TD’s, and DaRon Bland returned a Marcus Mariota interception 68 yards for a score to blow the game open.

Great to see Lamb and KaVontae Turpin back in the lineup. Lamb caught 5 passes for 110 yards and the 74 yard score, and he looked fully recovered from the ankle sprain that kept him out of three games and most of a fourth. Lamb and George Pickens are forming one of the best receiving duos in the league. Pickens caught 4 passes for 82 yards, and a couple of the receptions were terrific efforts against tight coverage. Between Williams and the ground game, Lamb and Pickens at WR, and Prescott playing some of the best football of his career, the Cowboys’ offense is clicking on every cylinder right now. Lot of season left, but through 7 games, there’s not much to complain about offensively.
The Cowboys’ defense has provided plenty of things to complain about this season, but they were a little better against the Commanders. Certainly not dominating or as good as you’d like to be, but any improvement is welcome right now. Twenty points allowed (2 were from a safety), only 205 passing yards allowed, and while Washington ran for 136 yards and almost 5 yards/carry, it wasn’t like the Commanders bludgeoned the Cowboys down in and down out like the Panthers did. Context matters: Washington was without 3 of its top receivers in Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, and former Cowboy Noah Brown. Plus, QB Jayden Daniels left the game in the third quarter with an injured right hamstring, and he did not return. The Commanders were all kinds of banged up; still, the Cowboys can use improvement in any way that they can get it. Four sacks, Bland’s pick six, and a pair of fourth down stops were among the highlights. Interesting to see the Cowboys use more man coverage over the last couple of weeks after being an overwhelmingly zone team to begin the season. I’d expect that to continue as DC Matt Eberflus continues to search for answers.

Next up is a trip to Denver to meet the 5-2 Broncos at 3:25 on CBS. Denver won a wild game over the Giants last week, scoring all of its points in the 4th quarter to win 33-32. The Broncos are led by their defense which ranks 3rd overall, 6th against the pass, 9th against the run, 4th in points allowed, and 1st by a wide margin in sacks. Former Sooner Nik Bonitto is 3rd in the league with 8 sacks and Jonathan Cooper is tied for 4th with 6. CB Pat Surtain is the reigning NFL defensive player of the year and a 2 time first team All Pro. Offensively, Denver is 6th in the league in rushing as a team and J.K. Dobbins is 6th individually. Bo Nix’s completion percentage is down a little from his rookie year, but he’s taken care of the football with only 4 picks in 256 pass attempts, and he’s only been sacked 8 times. Denver’s 2 losses are by a combined 4 points to the Colts and Chargers, and they have a win at Philadelphia, but some of their wins have been closer calls than one would’ve expected.
Would you believe me if I told you that the last time Dallas beat Denver was week 2 of the 1995 season? Seven straight times, the Broncos have beaten the Cowboys. I’d be stunned if it wasn’t 8 straight come Sunday evening. Denver’s defense significantly slows down Dallas’ offense, and Nix will hit a few big plays to Courtland Sutton and former Sooner Marvin Mims.
