Game Previews
Matt Meyer: Sixth straight loss for the Cowboys as they fell to Cincinnati 49-17 on Saturday. Bearcats QB Brendan Sorsby threw for 270 yards and 3 TD’s, and WR Cyrus Allen caught 2 TD’s and ran for another one. OSU’s defense forced a couple of punts in the third quarter, but they provided no resistance in the first two periods as Cincinnati marched for TD’s on all four first half possessions. RB Rodney Fields continues to be a bright spot for the Pokes. The Del City High School product touched the ball 24 times for 190 yards and a score.
Toughest game of the final five is up next for Oklahoma State as they travel to Lubbock to meet 14th ranked Texas Tech Saturday at 3:00 on ESPNU. The Red Raiders are coming off of their first loss of the season, a 26-22 loss at Arizona State. The Sun Devils had to march 75 yards in the final 2:00 to retake the lead following two Tech TD’s with under four minutes remaining. The Red Raiders played without starting QB Behren Morton as he is recovering from an injury to his right ankle. Morton was available in an emergency last week, so he could return to the lineup against OSU. RB Cameron Dickey has gained 631 yards on more than 6 a carry this season. WR’s Caleb Douglas and Coy Eakin both have over 400 yards receiving. Tech is at the top of the national charts in many team categories: 3rd in total offense, 10th in pass offense, 18th in rush offense, and 5th in scoring offense. What’s unusual to see is how good the Red Raiders have been defensively. Tech is 11th in total defense, 1st in rush defense, and 6th in scoring defense. Even if Will Hammond has to play in Morton’s stead again, it should be a long day in west Texas.

Game Notes
The Basics
The Oklahoma State football team (1-6 overall; 0-4 Big 12) is back on the road this week, facing Texas Tech (6-1 overall; 3-1 Big 12) in Lubbock for the first time since 2021. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, October 25, at Jones AT&T Stadium.
On the Air
The game will be televised live on ESPNU with Justin Kutcher and Dustin Fox on the call. It marks OSU’s first appearance on ESPNU since the Cowboys beat Iowa State, 20-14, on November 12, 2022. Saturday’s contest will also be carried live on the Cowboy Radio Network, with Dave Hunziker handling play-by-play, John Holcomb providing analysis and Robert Allen reporting from the sideline. Fans outside of the Cowboy Radio Network can listen to the OSU broadcast for free through The Varsity Network app.
The Series
Saturday’s game marks the 52nd meeting between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech in a series that dates to 1935. The series is tied at 24-24-3, with TTU holding a 13-8-2 advantage in games played in Lubbock. The Cowboys have won 12 of the past 15 overall meetings in the series, as well as six of the past seven games in Lubbock. The latest game played in Lubbock was a 23-0 shutout win for the Cowboys that cemented their place in the 2021 Big 12 Championship game. OSU interim head coach Doug Meacham is in his first season as a head coach and TTU coach Joey McGuire is 1-1 in his career against Oklahoma State.
In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is not ranked, but the Cowboys have been ranked at some point in every season from 2008-24. Through the 2024 season, Oklahoma State has been ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll in 15 of the past 17 seasons and has reached the top 10 in 11 of those 17 years. Although the first College Football Playoff rankings won’t be released until November, it’s worth noting that OSU has been part of the CFP rankings in eight of the past 10 seasons entering 2025. The Cowboys have also been included in 43 of the all-time CFP Rankings, which ranks among the most appearances in the country. Texas Tech is No. 14 in the AP Top 25 and No. 15 in the coaches poll.
Boone Pickens Stadium Named the Best in the Country
Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium is the best college football stadium in the country according to USA TODAY, which used reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor and Google to compile college football stadium rankings for 2025. In more than 1,700 combined reviews between the three services, Boone Pickens Stadium has an average of 4.8 stars to edge out Kansas State’s Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium for the top spot among the 136 Football Bowl Subdivision venues.
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 1-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Last week’s game against a ranked Cincinnati team marked the fourth career game as a head coach for interim head coach Doug Meacham. It was also the third game as interim defensive coordinator for former quality control coach Clint Bowen, who was elevated to the position September 28. The Cowboys are comprised of a majority of newcomers, as 62 of the 114 players on the roster (54%) were not part of the team in December. Through seven games, 20 of OSU’s players with at least one start are newcomers. Bright spots so far have included redshirt freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr., who last week recorded 163 rushing yards to rank as the fifth-most for a freshman in a game in school history, and edge rusher Wendell Gregory, who was named to The Athletic‘s midseason all-freshman team. Quarterbacks Hauss Hejny and Zane Flores have been sidelined with injuries, and wide receiver Sam Jackson V has stepped in and started at quarterback in their absence each of the past two games. The Cowboys have won the turnover battle in four of seven games this season.
An Oklahoma State Win Would …

• Improve its all-time record against Texas Tech to 25-24-3.
• Give it wins in 13 of its past 16 games against Texas Tech.
• Give it wins in seven of its past eight games in Lubbock.
• Improve its record against Texas Tech in Lubbock to 9-13-2.
• Make it 36-27 in its past 63 games overall, dating to 2020.
• Make it 6-4 in its past 10 and 12-7 in its past 19 games when playing as an unranked team against an AP Top 25 opponent.
• Make it 11-10 in its past 21 and 20-15 in its past 35 games vs. AP-ranked teams.
