Game Previews
Matt Meyer: Cowboys’ dreadful season continued in Tucson as Arizona beat Oklahoma State 41-13. Pokes are now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play. This one was never in doubt as the Wildcats marched 75 yards for a touchdown twice in the first quarter, led 38-6 after the third, and held the Cowboys’ offense out of the end zone. OSU only gained 158 yards and 7 first downs, going 3-17 on third down. After apparent progress last week against Baylor, the Cowboys took a step back offensively this week. Bright spot of the game was LaDainian Fields’ 55 yard INT return for a TD. OSU returns to Stillwater this Saturday to host the Houston Cougars at 11:00 AM on TNT. Houston is 4-1 and 1-1 in league play after getting drilled by Texas Tech last Saturday. The Cougars aren’t terrifying on offense as former Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman has only completed 59% of his passes, and as a team, Houston has only ran for 4 yards/carry. Cougars have a couple of big play threats at WR, as former Cowboy Stephon Johnson is averaging over 26 yards/catch, and leading receiver Amare Thomas is averaging nearly 18 yards/catch. Houston is decent defensively despite not having anyone with more than 2 ½ sacks or more than 1 INT. No real standouts, but solid everywhere. Points should be hard to come by for the Cowboys once again. Houston 31 Oklahoma State 17.

2015 Sugar Bowl Team Honored at Cowboy Football Reunion
The annual Cowboy Football Reunion will be held this weekend and the 2015 Sugar Bowl team will be honored as the team of special recognition as part of Oklahoma State’s matchup with Houston. This season marks the 10-year anniversary for a 2015 squad that began the year unranked before starting 10-0 and climbing to No. 4 in the AP and coaches polls. With a second-place finish in the Big 12 standings, the Cowboys earned a berth in the Sugar Bowl for the first time since the 1945 season and completed the year with an overall record of 10-3, including a 5-0 mark on the road to account for the program’s second undefeated road slate since 1945. Marquee wins included a 49-29 win over No. 5 TCU to mark the third-biggest win over an AP top 10 team in school history, a 30-27 win at Texas and a pair of 17-point comeback wins at Iowa State and Texas Tech. The 70-53 win in Lubbock also marked OSU’s second-most points scored in a game since the end of World War II, and the team’s 859 all-purpose yards in that game are still the most in a road game in school history. The 2015 Cowboys ranked No. 4 in the FBS in turnover margin, No. 6 in sacks, No. 7 in passing offense, No. 9 in turnovers gained, No. 9 in red zone scoring percentage and among the FBS top 20 in scoring offense, passes intercepted per game, passing efficiency, tackles for loss and more. Individually, defensive end Emmanual Ogbah headlined the roster in 2015 as a first team All-America selection and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year after ranking No. 4 in the FBS with 13.0 sacks – a number that still ranks as the most at OSU since Hall of Famer Leslie O’Neal produced 16.0 in 1984. Quarterback Mason Rudolph and wide receiver James Washington both ranked among the top 20 FBS players in several passing and receiving categories.
The Series
Saturday’s game will mark the 22nd overall meeting between Oklahoma State and Houston, with the series tied at 10-10-1. The series in Stillwater is tied at 5-5, and Saturday’s contest marks the first time the teams have met at Boone Pickens Stadium since 2009. While the 2025 season marks the third year Oklahoma State and Houston have both called the Big 12 home, the teams previously shared membership in the Missouri Valley Conference from 1951-1956 and faced each other in 11 straight seasons from 1951-61 to start the series between the programs. The Cowboys have won six of the past nine matchups in the series and five of the past seven games played in Stillwater. Interim head coach Doug Meacham is in his third career game as a head coach, while UH coach Willie Fritz has never faced Oklahoma State.
In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is not ranked, but the Cowboys have been ranked at some point in every season from 2008-24. Through the 2024 season, Oklahoma State has been ranked in the top 15 of the Associated Press poll in 15 of the past 17 seasons and has reached the top 10 in 11 of those 17 years. Although the first College Football Playoff rankings won’t be released until November, it’s worth noting that OSU has been part of the CFP rankings in eight of the past 10 seasons entering 2025. The Cowboys have also been included in 43 of the all-time CFP Rankings, which ranks among the most appearances in the country. Houston is not ranked.
Boone Pickens Stadium Named the Best in the Country
Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium is the best college football stadium in the country according to USA TODAY, which used reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor and Google to compile college football stadium rankings for 2025. In more than 1,700 combined reviews between the three services, Boone Pickens Stadium has an average of 4.8 stars to edge out Kansas State’s Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium for the top spot among the 136 Football Bowl Subdivision venues.
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Last week’s game at Arizona marked the second career game as a head coach for interim head coach and offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. It was also the first game as interim defensive coordinator for former quality control coach Clint Bowen, who was elevated to the position September 28. The Cowboys are comprised of a majority of newcomers, as 62 of the 114 players on the roster (54%) were not part of the team in December. Through five games, 18 of OSU’s players with at least one start are newcomers. Bright spots so far have included redshirt freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr., who turned in a 100-yard rushing game in his first career start against Tulsa, and linebacker Bryan McCoy Jr., who has led the team in tackles in three of the five games. Quarterback Hauss Hejny sustained an injury in the opening quarter of the 2025 season, but Zane Flores stepped in and has played well in his first career playing time. The best defensive effort so far came in the season opener when the Cowboys allowed just 225 total yards to mark their lowest yards allowed in a game since a shutout of Texas Tech in 2021. The Cowboys have won the turnover battle in four of five games this season.
