Game Previews
Matt Meyer – Time will tell how good of a win Oklahoma’s 24-13 victory over Michigan was, but right now, it looks like the kind of performance that puts the Sooners squarely in the CFP conversation. OU’s defense made life miserable for Michigan QB Bryce Underwood, as the freshman completed only 9 of his 24 passes for 142 yards. With the exception of a 75 yard TD run by Justice Haynes, Oklahoma didn’t allow the Wolverines much of anything on the ground. OU QB John Mateer was 21-34 for 270 yards, a TD, and a pick, and Mateer ran 19 times for 74 tough, well earned yards and a pair of scores. Perhaps the most impressive series of the game was Oklahoma’s 16 play, 78 yard drive that took 8:27 off the clock, ending with a FG to put the game out of reach. The win gives the Sooners a shot to be 5-0 headed to Dallas if they can beat Auburn in two weeks. This week, the challenge is to get refocused and handle success the correct way. Oklahoma goes to Philadelphia to play Temple at Lincoln Financial Field this Saturday at 11:00 AM on ESPN 2. The Owls are 2-0 after blowout wins over Massachusetts and Howard, so the Sooners will be a gigantic step up in competition for Temple. QB Evan Simon has completed 77% of his passes for 422 yards with 9 TD’s and 0 picks in two games. RB Jay Ducker averages over 7 yards a carry, and LB Cam’Ron Stewart has 3 sacks through the first two games. As long as the Sooners can move on from a thrilling win and avoid looking ahead to their conference opener, Oklahoma shouldn’t have much trouble on Saturday. If OU is not focused throughout the week and plays sloppy, you never know what can happen. Sooners 34 Owls 13.
