Arizona catcher Gabriel Moreno has been activated from the 60-day injured list and is expected to play when the Diamondbacks host the Cincinnati Reds Friday night.
Moreno last played June 14 before being placed on the IL with a hairline fracture in his right index finger. The 25-year-old Gold Glove winner initially sustained the injury when hit by a foul tip on June 6.
Moreno is batting .278/.324/.414 in 53 games this season. He has five home runs and 20 RBIs.
“Real excited to have him back. A Gold Glove defender that we’ve been missing for over two months,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told MLB Network Radio on Friday, saying he’d already “penciled” Moreno into the lineup.
In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks designated catcher Jose Herrera for assignment.
Herrera, 28, played in 57 games this season, taking over a larger role during Moreno’s injury. He batted .187 with two home runs and 17 RBI this season.
