GAME PREVIEWS
Matt Meyer: For the first time since 2004, the Oklahoma State Cowboys begin a season without Mike Gundy at the helm. Eric Morris replaces the Cowboy legend after turning around programs at Incarnate Word and North Texas, and he brings a bunch of his players from Denton with him. Most notably, the pair of QB Drew Mestemaker and RB Caleb Hawkins helped UNT lead the country in scoring offense a season ago, and they present the biggest reason for optimism. How those two and the rest of the offense produce against a higher level of competition remains to be seen, but the Cowboys will hang their hat on the QB/RB duo, as well as fellow transfer WR Wyatt Young, who averaged 18 yards per reception last year.
Defensively, LB Ethan Wesloski comes to Stillwater after recording 113 tackles for the Mean Green last season, and LB Isaiah Chisom, a UCLA transfer, is worth keeping an eye on. Jaleel Johnson and Malik Charles are two familiar faces on the edge, and Del City product LaDainian Fields has experience at CB. With 87 new players on the roster, so much is unknown, and the Cowboys are as difficult to get a read on as any team around. One thing is certain; week 1 provides an opportunity for the Pokes to exorcise one demon from last year, as the Pokes begin the season at Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane beat OSU last year in Gundy’s final game as head coach. Tulsa has had a losing record for four consecutive seasons, but QB Baylor Hayes returns and former Auburn RB Damari Alston will be one of the Hurricane’s top options. CB Elijah Green had 5 INT’s and 7 PBU’s a season ago.
It’s imperative for the Pokes to not only win but gain some confidence before a top 5 team in Oregon visits Stillwater in week 2.
