van Rooyen accepts temporary PGA Tour membership

South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen has accepted Special Temporary Membership for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, making him eligible for unlimited sponsor exemptions.

van Rooyen rose to No. 44 in the official world golf ranking by tying for 20th at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. That helped him earn enough non-member FedEx Cup points to secure the temporary membership.

The former University of Minnesota star tied for third at the WGC-Mexico Championship earlier this year. van Rooyen has also finished in the top 25 in each of the three cuts he has made in six events since the Tour resumed play in June.

He has currently earned 305 non-member points this season. To secure full Tour status for the 2020-21 season, van Rooyen must earn at least as many points as the No. 125 player in the FedEx Cup standings. Chase Seiffert currently sits at No. 125 with 254 points.

Special Temporary Members are not eligible for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, meaning van Rooyen must win one of the next two events in order to qualify for the first leg of the playoffs at The Northern Trust.

van Rooyen, 30, has three career victories worldwide. The most recent was the 2019 Scandinavian Invitation on the European Tour.
