Kerr among 28 added to U.S. Women’s Open Field

Former champion Cristie Kerr and 2020 AIG Women’s British Open winner Sophia Popov are among the notable additions to the field for next month’s 75th U.S. Women’s Open.

The USGA added 28 players Tuesday based on the Rolex Rankings.

The 2020 season’s final major is scheduled for Dec. 10-13 at Champions Golf Club in Houston. It was originally scheduled for June before being postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Former U.S. Women’s Open champions Michelle Wie West (2014), Paula Creamer (2010) and Na Yeon Choi (2012) did not sign up for this year’s competition.

Wie West, who gave birth to a daughter in June, told Golfweek last month she was undecided about traveling during the pandemic.

“I just don’t know if I feel comfortable traveling with (my daughter) yet,” she said. “In my mind I always thought by December it’s going to be safe to travel with her, but now … I’m not quite sure.”

Kerr, the 2007 champion, qualified for her 22nd straight U.S. Women’s Open. Germany’s Popov, ranked No. 28 in the world, will make her second USWO start.

Defending champion Jeongeun Lee6 is also in the 156-player field, along with prior champions In Gee Chun, Eun-Hee Ji, Ariya Jutanugarn, Brittany Lang, Inbee Park, Sung Hyun Park and So Yeon Ru.
