Dayton’s Toppin, Grant named top player, coach

Dayton forward Obi Toppin was named AP National Player of the Year and the Flyers’ Anthony Grant took honors as the top coach in college basketball. The awards announced Tuesday recognized Dayton, which finished 29-2 and ranked third in the final top 25 poll of the season, for a surprising transformation. The Flyers were undefeated in the Atlantic 10 and did not lose a road game the entire season.”In the 31 games that we played, our guys did a heck of a job of playing consistent and taking advantage of the opportunities that were in front of us,” said Grant, who played point guard at Dayton from 1983-87. “What we did accomplish in the shortened season is something I think that hopefully will be remembered.”Toppin averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in 2019-20 for a Dayton team that lost only to No. 1 Kansas — in overtime at the Maui Classic — and on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to Colorado — also in overtime.
