Sooners Ranked No. 18 in AP Preseason Football Poll
NORMAN — For the 26th consecutive season, the Oklahoma football team is ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 25. The AP released its preseason poll Monday morning and OU is ranked No. 18.
The Sooners, entering their fourth season under head coach Brent Venables, garnered 463 points in the poll. Oklahoma’s streak of 26 appearances in the preseason AP Top 25 is the second-longest current string behind Ohio State (37). It also represents the 67th time that Oklahoma has appeared in the preseason AP poll, second most behind the Buckeyes (72 times). OU’s all-time average preseason AP rank is 7.07, best in the nation (Alabama is second at 7.10).
Additionally, of its 67 appearances in the AP preseason poll, Oklahoma has been ranked 20th or higher 65 times. That has occurred in each of the last 26 preseason polls.
The preseason top 10 consists of No. 1 Texas (1,552 points), No. 2 Penn State (1,547), No. 3 Ohio State (1,472), No. 4 Clemson (1,398), No. 5 Georgia (1,331), No. 6 Notre Dame (1,325), No. 7 Oregon (1,236), No. 8 Alabama (1,179), No. 9 LSU (1,174) and No. 10 Miami (889).
The Sooners are one of 10 SEC teams in this year’s preseason AP poll. Outside of the top 10, South Carolina is ranked No. 13 (667 points), Florida is No. 15 (626), Texas A&M is No. 19 (434), Ole Miss is No. 21 (370) and Tennessee is No. 24 (192). OU is scheduled to play three of the top 10 teams in the AP preseason poll and seven of the top-25 squads: Texas (neutral site), Alabama (away), LSU (home), South Carolina (away), Michigan (home), Ole Miss (home) and Tennessee (away).
Oklahoma, which is unranked in the preseason USA Today Sports AFCA Coaches Poll (first team outside of the top 25 receiving votes), was picked 10th in the SEC preseason media poll.
OU opens the 2025 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 30, against Illinois State at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. on SEC Network+ and ESPN+.
