Game Previews from The Animals
Matt Meyer: Sooners got out of Auburn with a much needed win if they’re going to keep their head above water this season. Kip Lewis’ 63 yard INT return for a TD is the play of the year so far. It wasn’t the best day for the Oklahoma defense, but they slammed the door late in the game with Lewis’ pick 6 and 3 sacks on the Tigers’ final 2 possessions. Offensively, the struggles continued, but Michael Hawkins’ 48 yard TD run on OU’s first drive and Hawkins’ 60 yard completion to J.J. Hester that set up another score highlighted the day. Equally as important was the Sooners not turning it over.
All eyes shift to the Cotton Bowl this Saturday for an historic OU/Texas game at 2:30 on ABC. First time these old rivals meet in SEC play, as if this game needs more juice. Biggest question coming into the game is will Texas QB Quinn Ewers return from his abdominal injury? He was questionable to play in the Longhorns’ last game against Mississippi State but did not see action. Arch Manning has played very well in his absence, but if Ewers can go, I imagine he’ll give it a shot. Both teams had a bye week before this one. Oklahoma would love to get healthier on the offensive line and get a couple of WR’s back. Texas is the better team with the better QB, whoever plays for the Horns. Can the Sooners do enough on defense to keep them in the game in the 4th quarter? Wild and unexpected things tend to happen in this series, but I have to go with the better team here. Longhorns 31 Sooners 20.
“The Legend” Al Eschbach: Oklahoma tries to knock off No. 1 Texas while Oklahoma State takes a much needed off weekend. The Sooners will try to topple the unbeaten and top-ranked Longhorns at 2:30 p.m. in the Cotton Bowl. OU is a 14 and a 1/2 point underdog heading into the heated rivalry encounter. Coach Brent Venables club is hoping to get a couple of injured players back for the encounter. It will be a daunting challenge for true freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., who will getting his second career start.
