When Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson dropped a damning report two years ago of allegations of excessive impermissible benefits provided to Miami athletes by former booster Nevin Shapiro, the dollar amount was said to range in the "millions of dollars."
Per the Associated Press, the amount the NCAA has cited in its Notice of Allegations is slightly less than that. Tim Reynolds, who has been on top of this story, writes that "Shapiro was responsible for providing about $170,000 in impermissible benefits to Hurricanes athletes, recruits, coaches and others between 2002 and 2010."
The AP report states that at least $90,000 was spent to convinceĀ Vince Wilfork and Antrel Rolle to sign with a sports agency Shapiro was connected to, andĀ $56,000 was spent on meals, entertainment, clothing, jewelry, travel and the like. The values, reportedly said by the NCAA to be approximate, were spent on 72 former players, three recruits and 12 "family and friends" members. The NOA also reportedly alleges that Shapiro provided impermissible supplemental compensation to at least three former Miami assistant coaches.
Miami has not released its NOA and likely won't. Rather, UM president Donna Shalala wrote a scathing response to the NOA indicating Miami plans to fight any further punishment outside of two postseason bans it has already self-imposed as a result of the two-year investigation by the NCAA. Those bans included an appearance in the ACC championship game this past season.
The NCAA's Committee on Infractions plans to hear Miami's response in June.
